Caitlin Blue, the set decorator in charge of
putting together the Bean's apartment, wanted to make the apartment
reflect its inhabitants. The furniture and decor is supposed to look as
if Zoe and Iris finished the apartment only after a long time, going
through flea markets, thrift shops, and estate sales for unique items.
Blue wanted the apartment to look as if the furniture was mix-and-
match without looking too mismatched or that the appearance was
coordinated. "New Yorkers don't move that often, so their homes have
'a layered' look; they will add a newer acquisition to stuff they
bought years ago," says Blue.
The living room is the most seen part of the
Bean's apartment. It includes the embossed tin ceiling, giant skylight,
and other unusual details, suck as the turquoise sofa with the floral
pattern, the green velvet curtains, and other small things that make
the apartment look like a Chelsea factory converted to suit a mother
and daughter. It undoubtedly appears to be the residence of owners who
are fashionable, up-to-date, and well-traveled.
